Community Empowerment

The Community Empowerment department builds capacity for and guides Latino/Hispanic families with resources, tools and opportunities to amplify knowledge of external processes and structures and to strengthen internal agency over their lives to support a more equitable community.

ELP is an after school reading program for students in grades K-5th offered four times a week at Fremont International Academy.

 

This program was initiated by the Voces Youth Council as a "Reading Buddy" program. The program has now added a new element of activities and projects to enrich literacy ability. Projects are created through thematic plans that connect literacy to other subjects, such as Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, and more.

CLU is an after school program for any students in grades 5th-9th in the Battle Creek area. CLU meets every Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:00pm-6:30pm in the Voces Community room. Homework support is available from 4:00pm-5:00pm prior to the program. 

We offer students creative activities to:

  • Homework Support

  • Work as a team

  • Form creative solutions to problems

  • Find positive ways to express difficult emotions

  • Manage their stress and anxiety

  • Understand different cultures and norms

  • Accept and build confidence in themselves

YC is an after school program for any students in grades 9th-12th in the Battle Creek area. The Youth Council meets on Thursdays from 5:30-7:00 pm in the Voces Community room. Homework or SAT support is offered from 4:00pm-5:30pm for anyone in the community. 

Activities of the Youth Council include:

  • Homework/SAT support

  • Volunteering for community service

  • Raising money and awareness for causes in need

  • Developing leadership skills for career and college readiness

  • Participating in workshops and retreats about social and cultural awareness
